Dusseldorf to Cologne (Köln)

With temps still high (forecast in the 90s) we again decided on a shortish day in the saddle.  We've heard and read that Cologne is an historic and fascinating place, so that was our destination.  After a few km of urban riding (but with good bike lanes) we were once again near the Rhine and in farmland.  Mostly a mix of corn and some sunflower fields in full bloom.  After about 10 km of riding, near Zons, we took a small ferry across the river.

Near Dormagen we passed a very large Bayer installation.  About 10 km later, on the outskirts of Cologne) we rode by a huge Ford plant, and as we approached Cologne we passed more industrial areas.  But mostly we were on good paths away from any traffic, and had only a few navigation hiccups.

We were at the Hotel Sion, just a few blocks from the river in the heart of the old city, by 2 (35 km for the day).   It turned out to be a good choice: great location and comfy room with a view of the Rathaus (old city hall), very friendly reception, complementary beers from their brewery in the room fridge and coupons for more free beers at their restaurant around the corner.  There is much to see and do in Cologne, and tomorrow's forecast is for rain, so we decided to stay two nights.

Our Rhine map book ended at Cologne, so we went out to a a bookstore for a replacement.  We found one, and then went to check out a large outdoor store that the hotel clerk recommended.  An amazing place: four levels of all kinds of gear, and even a pool on the ground floor for demoing the canoes and kayaks.

The hotel-affiliated brewery (Sion) has been in business since 1318.
