Ilverich to Itter (southern suburb of Dusseldorf)

Forecast for today was for temps around 100, so we planned a very short day to a suburb just south of Dusseldorf.  Once we were out of Ilverich and on the Rhine bike path it was mostly smooth sailing.

Just before Dusseldorf we passed a community pool along with lines of people walking or biking over there.  Once in the city we crossed the Rhine on a bridge and quickly found the bike route on the west side.  There was a fair set up on the east side, just past the bridge so (thankfully) we didn't have to ride through it.

Dusseldorf was heavily bombed during the war so almost all the buildings are new, and much of the architecture is strikingly modern.

Leaving the city we passed by an industrial area but the bike path was separated from it by fencing and plants so we hardly noticed.

By 1 pm we'd arrived at our destination, a modern hotel (with AC!) in a suburb a little south of Dusseldorf.  Only 29 km for the day, but reasonable given the heat.  We were surprised on check in when the desk clerk told us there was no place to park the bike inside; we've never run into that anywhere else in Germany.  After cleaning up, and before we headed out, I asked another clerk about bike parking and heard the same answer.  But when we came back to the hotel later on she told us they'd found a room where we could put the bike overnight.

With the heat we didn't do a lot of walking around and exploring this afternoon.  We did find a great German and Croatian restaurant close to the hotel.  The schnitzel was roughly the size of Idaho.  Another city, another beer.
